Clay-loam behind a wall
Clay holds water and pushes hard when saturated — a completely different load case from coastal sand. Drainage stone and a daylighted outfall are not optional here, and this is where badly built walls fail first.
Irrigation on a slope
Water applied faster than clay can absorb it simply runs downhill. Zones on sloped ground need shorter cycles with soak time, or the top of the slope stays dry while the bottom stays wet.
The Historic District
Around Lake DeFuniak the housing stock is genuinely old, and clay brick suits it far better than modern concrete pavers do. We will say when the architecture calls for a different material than the budget spreadsheet does.

If it is holding real load — a driveway, a structure, or a slope above it — then yes, and we treat that as the default. Height alone is not the only trigger; what sits above the wall matters just as much.

Can you terrace a steep back yard?
Yes, and it is usually the right answer. A series of low terraced walls is often cheaper, safer and better looking than one tall wall doing all the work.
Which grass suits a sloped clay lot?
Celebration Bermuda in full sun — it recovers well and roots deeply. Palmetto St. Augustine under the mature trees around the lake. Watering has to be split into shorter cycles either way.
